How to Install Minecraft Maps

Java and Bedrock handle maps differently. Java uses a saves folder and extracted ZIPs. Bedrock uses .mcworld files that import when you double-click them. This guide covers both editions, plus the three most common reasons a map does not appear after installation.

Before you start

Close Minecraft completely. Not just the game window — the launcher too. Moving files into saves while the launcher is running can cause the map not to appear until you restart it.

Java Edition

  1. Download the map. Java maps usually come as a .zip archive.
  2. Extract the ZIP. Right-click and select "Extract All" (Windows) or use 7-Zip. You need the folder inside that contains level.dat.
  3. Open the saves folder. Press Win + R, type %appdata%\.minecraft\saves, and press Enter. On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. On Linux: ~/.minecraft/saves.
  4. Move the extracted folder into saves. The folder you move must contain level.dat directly inside it. If you see another folder inside, go one level deeper.
  5. Launch Minecraft. The map appears in Singleplayer.
Structure check: the path should be .minecraft/saves/MyMapName/level.dat. If you see .minecraft/saves/MyMapName/MyMapName/level.dat, you extracted one level too high. Move the inner folder up.

Bedrock Edition

  1. Download the map. Bedrock maps are usually .mcworld files.
  2. Double-click the file. Minecraft should launch and import the map automatically. Wait for the "Import Successful" confirmation.
  3. If double-click does not work, rename the .zip to .mcworld and try again. Or extract it into minecraftWorlds.

Where Bedrock stores worlds:

  • Windows: %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds
  • Android: storage/emulated/0/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds
  • iOS: Minecraft/games/com.mojang/minecraftWorlds

Version compatibility

A map built for one version may load in a newer one but break custom command blocks. If the map page specifies a version, use that version. Common scenarios:

  • 1.12.2 maps — often break on modern versions because block IDs changed.
  • 1.16.5 maps — usually work on newer versions with minor issues.
  • 1.20+ maps — mostly forward-compatible, but custom data packs may break.

If the map does not appear at all after installation, check the version string in the map's download page.

If the map does not appear

  • Wrong folder depth. The folder in saves must contain level.dat directly. If there is another folder inside, you extracted one level too high.
  • Launcher was open. Close Minecraft and the launcher completely before moving files.
  • Version mismatch. A 1.19 map may load in 1.20 but break custom command blocks. Use the version the map page specifies.
  • Missing dependencies. Some maps require a datapack or mod. Check the map's page for requirements.
  • Corrupt ZIP. If the download failed partway through, re-download and check the file size against the source page.

Backing up a world

Before installing a map that overwrites an existing world (rare), or before updating Minecraft itself, back up your world folder. Copy it to a USB drive or a separate folder. World corruption from a failed update is not recoverable in most cases.

Frequently asked questions

Can I play a Java map on Bedrock?
Not directly. Java and Bedrock use different world formats. Some maps have both versions published separately — check the map's download page. A Java map will not load on Bedrock without conversion tools, and the conversion often breaks custom command blocks.
Do I need mods to play a map?
Most maps are vanilla. Some, like Drehmal, require Fabric and a specific set of mods. Check the map's page for requirements.
Why does my map show up as a folder with an odd name?
Minecraft reads the folder name as the world's display name. Rename the folder to whatever you want the world to be called in the Singleplayer list.
Can I install multiple maps?
Yes. Each world is a separate folder in saves. You can install as many as your disk allows.
Will installing a map overwrite my existing world?
No, unless you name the map's folder the same as an existing world. Minecraft will show both or, in edge cases, refuse to load. Rename the new folder if there is a conflict.
