Create

A building and automation mod centered on rotational power. Water wheels, windmills, and steam engines generate force. Shafts, cogs, and belts transmit it. Contraptions — machines you assemble from visible parts — can fly, drive, or drill. Nothing feels like magic; everything feels mechanical.

What Create actually does

Create is an automation mod built around rotational force. Instead of electricity or magic, you generate power with water wheels, windmills, and steam engines, then transmit it through shafts, cogs, and belts. Machines are assembled from visible components — a mechanical press is a physical object with moving parts, not a single block with a GUI. You watch it work.

That design choice is what makes Create different from every other tech mod. IndustrialCraft, Mekanism, and Thermal Expansion all use cables and one-block machines. Create uses scaffolding, gearboxes, and moving contraptions. The factory floor becomes a build in itself — half of what players post on the subreddit are aesthetic showcases of working machines, not just functional output rates.

Version 6.0.0 introduced chain conveyors, package logistics, and a full cardboard system, expanding the mod beyond pure mechanical automation into factory logistics. If you played Create before 6.0 and thought "this is great, but I wish item transport was less of a bottleneck," that's exactly what 6.0 addressed.

Core features

1
Rotational powerWater wheels, windmills, and steam engines generate force — you choose the source.
2
ContraptionsAssemble moving machines that can fly, drive, or drill — built from visible parts, not a single block.
3
LogisticsBelts, funnels, and packages for item transport — full factory automation.
4
TrainsBuild and schedule trains for long-distance transport, with rail networks and station logistics.

How to install it

Create is a client-and-server mod. Contraptions and machines are simulated server-side, and the client renders them — installing it on only one side will cause connection or display issues. Both ends need the same JAR.

  1. Download the version matching your loader — Forge or NeoForge. The JARs are different.
  2. Download the version matching your Minecraft version. Create ships separate builds per MC version; loading the wrong one will crash on startup.
  3. Drop the JAR into .minecraft/mods on both the client and the server.
  4. Launch the game. Press the ponder key on any Create block to see a visual tutorial for how it works — the mod has built-in in-game documentation.
Forge / NeoForge only. Create is officially a Forge and NeoForge mod. A Fabric port exists as a separate community project, but it is not the official Create release and may lag behind on features.

Frequently asked questions

Is Create a tech mod like IndustrialCraft or Mekanism?
It's a tech mod, but with a different philosophy. Instead of cables and electricity, Create uses visible mechanical components — shafts, cogs, belts, water wheels. The machines are built from parts rather than placed as single blocks, and they physically move when powered.
Does Create work on Fabric?
Create is officially a Forge and NeoForge mod. A Fabric port exists as a separate community project, but it is not the official Create release and may lag behind on features.
What is the difference between Create and Create 6.0?
Create 6.0 is the current major version. It introduced chain conveyors, package logistics, and a full cardboard system, expanding the mod beyond pure mechanical automation into factory logistics.
Do I need other mods to play Create?
No. Create is self-contained — it adds its own power generation, machine components, and item transport. Many players pair it with JEI for recipe lookup, but that's a convenience, not a requirement.
Does Create work on both client and server?
Yes. Create needs to be installed on both the client and the server. Contraptions and machines are simulated server-side, and the client renders them — installing it on only one side will cause connection or display issues.
