Safety & Source Policy
What we verify, what we do not scan, and how to read the source status on every resource page.
Our approach to safety
We do not scan files. We do not promise that a resource is virus-free. What we do is link to the original creator or a recognized platform, state where the download goes, and mark sources that are down or unverifiable. This page explains exactly what that means.
Read this first: downloading any third-party file carries risk. This is true for Minecraft mods, shaders, maps, and texture packs. MinecraftDrop reduces the risk by linking to real creator pages and marking unverified sources — but it cannot eliminate the risk entirely.
What we check
| Check | What it means |
|---|---|
| Source URL | The download button points to the creator's page, CurseForge, Modrinth, or the creator's own site. We do not mirror files unless we have written permission or the resource is our own. |
| Metadata | Edition, supported Minecraft version, loader, and file format are copied from the source page. If the source does not state a value, we mark it "unknown." |
| Source availability | We periodically re-check source URLs. If a source returns 404 or has been taken down, the download button is disabled and the page is marked "Source unavailable." |
| Licensing | We check whether a resource permits redistribution. Resources that prohibit redistribution are linked to the creator's page, not re-hosted. |
What we do not check
- File contents — we do not download and scan JAR or ZIP files. We do not run antivirus on them.
- Malware — we cannot confirm that a third-party file is free of malware. The same caution you would apply to any download applies here.
- In-game behavior — we do not test whether a mod works in every configuration. Compatibility data comes from the source page, not from our own testing.
- Server-side safety — a client-side mod may still trigger anti-cheat on some servers. That is not something we can verify.
How to read a resource page
Every resource page has a Source status label. Possible values:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Verified | The source URL was reachable and the metadata matched the source page at the time of the last check. |
| Unverified | The resource is listed but we have not confirmed the current source or metadata. Treat this as a starting point, not a guarantee. |
| Source unavailable | The source URL is down or has been removed. The download button is disabled. The resource stays listed so you can find it if the source returns. |
Before you download anything
- Check the source domain. The download button should go to CurseForge, Modrinth, or the creator's own site. If it goes anywhere else, be skeptical.
- Look for installer prompts. A Minecraft mod is a
.jarfile. A map is a.zipor.mcworld. If a page asks you to run a separate installer or enter Microsoft credentials, close it. - Back up your world. Before adding any mod that changes world content (blocks, items, entities), copy your world folder to a safe location. This takes 30 seconds and saves hours.
- Report broken or suspicious sources. If a resource links to a domain you do not trust, use the contact form.
Reporting a problem
If a resource is broken, mislabeled, or leads somewhere it should not, use the contact page. If you are a creator and want a resource removed, see Copyright / DMCA.
