Entity Culling

Minecraft renders entities you can't actually see — mobs behind walls, chests underground, projectiles outside your field of view. Entity Culling uses async path-tracing to detect which ones are genuinely invisible and skips rendering them. The game looks identical. The GPU works less.

What Entity Culling actually does

Minecraft renders many entities and block entities that the player cannot actually see — behind walls, underground, or outside the field of view. Entity Culling uses async path-tracing to detect which entities are visible and skips rendering the ones that are not. The path-tracing runs on a separate thread, so it doesn't steal frames from the main render loop while it works out what to hide.

Unlike some optimization mods, Entity Culling does not reduce render distance, remove visual detail, or lower texture quality. It only skips rendering work that would have been invisible anyway. If you could have seen it before, you still see it. If you couldn't, you never would have noticed it was gone.

The practical gain depends on the scene. A mob farm with 200+ entities behind stone — big improvement. A quiet singleplayer field with three cows — barely measurable. The mods where it pays off most are crowded servers, heavy modpacks with lots of block entities, and any world where you're standing in a village or a factory with more than a dozen mobs in range.

What it culls

1
EntitiesMobs, items, and projectiles that are occluded by blocks.
2
Block entitiesChests, signs, and machines that are not visible — the mod catches these too, which many rendering optimizers miss.
3
Async path-tracingVisibility tests run on a separate thread, so they don't cost you frames while they run.
4
Whitelist configConfig screen for entities you want to always render, even when occluded.

How to install it

Entity Culling is a client-side mod. The server does not need it, and it won't cause desync or rejection if you join a vanilla or modded server. Install it like any other mod JAR.

  1. Download the version matching your loader — Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. The JARs are different.
  2. Download the version matching your Minecraft version. Entity Culling ships separate builds per MC version; loading the wrong one will crash on startup.
  3. Drop the JAR into .minecraft/mods (or your launcher's mods folder for the profile you're using).
  4. Launch the game. The mod works silently — there's no HUD, no button, no visible change. You'll only notice it in the FPS counter.
Client-side only. The server does not need Entity Culling installed, and installing it won't cause a vanilla server to reject you. It only affects what your client renders — nothing syncs to other players.

Frequently asked questions

Does Entity Culling change how the game looks?
No. It only skips rendering work for entities that are already invisible — behind walls, underground, or outside your field of view. Anything you could have seen before, you still see.
Do I need Entity Culling on the server?
No. Entity Culling is client-side. The server does not need it installed, and it won't cause desync or rejection if you join a vanilla or modded server.
How much FPS does Entity Culling add?
The gain depends on the scene. Busy worlds with many entities — mob farms, crowded servers, villages — see the biggest improvement. In a quiet singleplayer world, the difference may be minimal.
Which loaders does Entity Culling support?
Entity Culling supports Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge. Choose the JAR matching your loader and Minecraft version.
Can I whitelist specific entities?
Yes. The mod includes a config screen where you can whitelist entities that should always render, even when occluded.
