GeckoLib

The 3D animation library behind most animated mobs, bosses, and blocks in modded Minecraft. If a mod page says "requires GeckoLib," this is the one — and without it, that custom boss you just installed won't load, won't animate, or will crash the game before the title screen.

What GeckoLib actually does

GeckoLib is not a content mod. It does not add mobs, bosses, or items. It is a library that other mods use to animate 3D models. Without GeckoLib, any mod that depends on it will crash on startup or fail to display its custom entities correctly. That custom boss you installed — the one with the attack animation and the walk cycle and the death sequence — runs on GeckoLib. Without it, the mob may not spawn at all, or it may spawn frozen in its default pose.

The library provides a keyframe animation system for entities, blocks, items, and armor. Minecraft's built-in animation system cannot handle keyframe-based 3D animation for custom models — it was designed for vanilla mobs with simple limb movement. GeckoLib fills that gap. It's the reason a mod can ship a dragon with a wing-flap animation that looks like it was hand-authored, because it was hand-authored and GeckoLib is what plays it back.

The scale of dependency is large. Hundreds of mods list GeckoLib in their requirements — everything from small mob-addition mods to major content overhauls. If you've played modded Minecraft at all, you've probably used it, even if you never saw it in a mod list.

What it enables in other mods

1
Animated entitiesSmooth, keyframe-based animations for custom mobs and bosses — walk cycles, attack sequences, idle fidgeting.
2
Animated blocksMoving parts, rotating components, and interactive block models — machines that look like they're working.
3
Animated itemsItems with idle animations or held animations — a floating crystal, a pulsing sword.
4
Animated armorArmor sets with custom bone-based animations — wings that flap, capes that flutter.

How to install it

GeckoLib must match the dependent mod's version and your Minecraft version. A GeckoLib build for 1.20.1 will not work with a 1.21 mod. Install it alongside the dependent mod, in the same mods folder.

  1. Install the loader that the dependent mod requires — Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge.
  2. Download the GeckoLib JAR from CurseForge for your exact loader and Minecraft version. Check the file list carefully — GeckoLib ships builds for many MC versions.
  3. Place GeckoLib and the dependent mod in the mods folder together. Subfolders inside mods usually work, but some launchers have issues with them — safest to keep both JARs at the top level.
  4. Launch the game. GeckoLib does not appear as a separate item or menu — it works silently in the background.
Version matching. GeckoLib versions are tied to Minecraft versions. A GeckoLib build for 1.20.1 will not work on 1.21.1. Check the file list on CurseForge and pick the build that matches both your loader and your Minecraft version.

Do you need GeckoLib on a server?

If the dependent mod is server-side (adds mobs, bosses, or blocks that need to exist on the server), then GeckoLib must be installed on both the client and the server. If the dependent mod is client-side only, GeckoLib may only be needed on the client. Check the dependent mod's page for its side requirements — that's the authoritative source, not the GeckoLib page itself.

Frequently asked questions

I installed GeckoLib but the mod still says it is missing.
The most common cause is a version mismatch. Check that the GeckoLib version matches the dependent mod's required version and your Minecraft version. Also check that GeckoLib is in the mods folder, not a subfolder.
Can I use GeckoLib with other animation libraries?
GeckoLib is generally compatible with other libraries because it is dependency-based. If a mod requires a different animation library, install both. They serve different mods and do not usually conflict.
Does GeckoLib work on Bedrock?
No. GeckoLib is a Java Edition mod library.
How do I know if a mod needs GeckoLib?
The mod page will list it under "Dependencies" or "Relations." If you skip it, the game will crash on launch with a message naming GeckoLib as the missing dependency.
Do I need GeckoLib on the server?
It depends on the dependent mod. If the mod is server-side (adds mobs, bosses, or blocks that need to exist on the server), then GeckoLib must be installed on both client and server. If the mod is client-side only, GeckoLib may only be needed on the client.

Why this listing exists

Most resource sites either dump hundreds of unverified links with no context, or hide downloads behind fake countdown timers and redirect chains. This page follows a different approach: it shows the resource's real metadata, links to the creator's original page, and states clearly what we have and have not verified.

If you find a broken link, an incorrect version, or a download that goes somewhere unexpected, report it using the contact form. If you are the creator and want this listing removed or changed, see Copyright / DMCA.
