Just Enough Items (JEI)

A searchable item list to the side of your inventory, with recipes on hover and usage on a keypress. In vanilla you barely notice it. In a 200-mod pack, it's the difference between playing the game and alt-tabbing to a wiki every five minutes. The most downloaded utility mod on CurseForge — and the first mod to cross 500 million downloads.

What JEI actually does

JEI adds a searchable item list to the side of your inventory screen. Hover over any item to see its crafting recipe. Press U to see what an item is used for. In modded Minecraft with hundreds of items, this is not optional — it is the only practical way to learn recipes. Alt-tabbing to a wiki breaks flow; JEI keeps you in the game.

The scope of the mod is bigger than it sounds. JEI is the reference implementation that other mods plug into. When a modder adds a new crafting station or a custom recipe type, JEI is what displays it. That's why mods like Create, Mekanism, and Botania all have JEI integration — because JEI is where players look.

JEI was the first mod to reach 500 million downloads on CurseForge, and it remains the most downloaded utility mod on the platform. Almost every modpack ships with it by default. If you're installing mods one at a time, JEI is one of the first you should add — without it, you're guessing at every recipe.

Core features

1
Recipe lookupHover over an item to see how it is crafted — for vanilla and modded items alike.
2
Usage lookupPress U to see what recipes use an item. Useful for figuring out what a modded material is for.
3
SearchFind items by name or mod. Filters let you narrow by mod ID when you know roughly what you're looking for.
4
Cheat modeOptional. Gives items directly in single-player or with cheats enabled — off by default.

How to install it

JEI is a client-side mod for recipe viewing. The server does not need it unless you're using cheat mode in multiplayer. Install it like any other mod JAR.

  1. Download the version matching your loader — Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge. The JARs are different and not interchangeable.
  2. Download the version matching your Minecraft version. JEI ships separate builds per MC version; loading the wrong one will crash on startup.
  3. Drop the JAR into .minecraft/mods (or your launcher's mods folder for the profile you're using).
  4. Launch the game. The JEI item list appears when you open your inventory. Press E to open the inventory and look to the right side.
JEI vs EMI. EMI is a newer recipe viewer that supports JEI plugins. Some modpacks use EMI instead of JEI. Do not install both — they serve the same purpose and will conflict.

Frequently asked questions

Does JEI work on servers?
JEI is client-side for recipe viewing. It works on any server. Cheat mode requires server-side permissions or single-player cheats enabled.
Why is JEI not showing recipes for a mod?
The mod may not have JEI integration. Most major mods include it, but some do not. Check the mod's page for JEI support. If the mod uses a different recipe viewer (like EMI), JEI will not show its recipes.
Can I use JEI with Mouse Tweaks?
Yes. They serve different purposes and are commonly installed together. Mouse Tweaks handles inventory movement; JEI handles recipe lookup.
Should I use JEI or EMI?
Both are recipe viewers. JEI is older, more established, and has broader mod support. EMI is newer and supports JEI plugins. Do not install both — they serve the same purpose and will conflict.
What is JEI cheat mode?
Cheat mode lets you pull items directly from the JEI list into your inventory. It requires single-player cheats enabled, or server-side permissions on a multiplayer server. Most players keep it off.

Why this listing exists

Most resource sites either dump hundreds of unverified links with no context, or hide downloads behind fake countdown timers and redirect chains. This page follows a different approach: it shows the resource's real metadata, links to the creator's original page, and states clearly what we have and have not verified.

If you find a broken link, an incorrect version, or a download that goes somewhere unexpected, report it using the contact form. If you are the creator and want this listing removed or changed, see Copyright / DMCA.
