Bliss Shaders

Cinematic shaders usually produce high-contrast, saturated images that look great in screenshots but cause eye strain over long sessions. Bliss is the opposite. Soft, mellow lighting achieved through the AgX tonemapping operator — lower contrast without washing out the image. A fantasy look, not a realistic one.

What Bliss Shaders actually does

Bliss is a large edit of Chocapic13's V9.0–V9.1 shaders. The creator describes it as being in a transition of style changes. The goal is soft, mellow lighting that is calm on the eyes — lower contrast without washing out the image, achieved through the AgX tonemapping operator.

Version 2.1.2 is the most downloaded recent build, with 14.8 million downloads. It supports Minecraft 1.17 through 26.2 on Iris. The Distant Horizons support added in the 2.1.x line is significant — it means Bliss can render LOD terrain far beyond vanilla's render distance, which turns the shader's soft aesthetic into something that genuinely feels like a distant horizon rather than a fog wall.

The floodfill colored lighting — credited to Null — makes light sources illuminate nearby fog, which is what gives the shader its signature atmospheric look. Combined with AgX tonemapping, the result is that rarest of shader categories: one designed for visual comfort rather than screenshot appeal.

How to install it

Bliss is a shader pack, not a mod. It runs inside Iris or OptiFine. You drop it into shaderpacks, not mods.

  1. Install Iris (recommended) or OptiFine. Iris is required for Distant Horizons support.
  2. Download the latest Bliss Shaders .zip from CurseForge. Do not extract the ZIP.
  3. Place the .zip in .minecraft/shaderpacks.
  4. In-game: Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. Select Bliss from the list.
Creator's note. Version 2.1.0 is described as "rough, messy, inconsistent" and in a transition of style changes. The creator uploaded it because it had been available on GitHub for two years. If you want a stable build, use v2.1.2.

Frequently asked questions

Does Bliss support Distant Horizons?
Yes, from version 2.1.x onward. Iris is required for DH support. OptiFine does not support Distant Horizons.
Is Bliss a realistic shader?
No. Bliss is fantasy-styled with soft, mellow lighting. It prioritizes a calm look over photorealism. If you want realistic lighting, use BSL or SEUS PTGI.
Why is Bliss described as "rough" by the creator?
The creator states that version 2.1.0 is in a transition of style changes and is not in a place they like technically or visually. They uploaded it because some users had been using the GitHub version for two years. Use 2.1.2 for the most recent stable-ish build.
Is Bliss based on Chocapic13?
Yes. Bliss is a large edit of Chocapic13's V9.0–V9.1 shaders. The creator built on that base and added AgX tonemapping, floodfill lighting, and Distant Horizons support.
Does Bliss work on OptiFine?
Partially. Bliss works on OptiFine with limited features — Distant Horizons support requires Iris. For the full feature set, use Iris.
