Complementary Reimagined

The vanilla-faithful shader that scales from a Potato preset on integrated graphics to Ultra on an RTX 4070. Colored lighting, sharp shadows, volumetric fog — but the world still looks like Minecraft. Most shader packs force you to choose between "ugly" and "unplayable." Complementary was designed to avoid that trade-off.

What Complementary Reimagined actually does

Complementary Reimagined is designed to reimagine Minecraft's visuals while keeping the game recognizable. It adds colored block light, soft shadows, volumetric fog, and improved water without turning the game into a photorealistic renderer. The default settings prioritize a cohesive vanilla-plus look. You're not looking at a completely different game — you're looking at Minecraft with the lighting it always should have had.

The pack includes two styles: Reimagined (preserves Minecraft's unique visual elements) and Unbound (more realistic experience). You can switch between them or customize settings individually. The distinction matters if you're trying to match a specific aesthetic — Reimagined is the one that feels closest to the original game, while Unbound is more of an interpretation.

The performance presets are the pack's key feature. Most shader packs offer a "low" preset as an afterthought. Complementary was designed so that the Potato preset is genuinely playable on integrated graphics, not just technically functional. If you're on a laptop with Intel HD Graphics and want to see what shaders look like without dropping to 15 FPS, this is the pack to try first.

Performance presets

1
PotatoRuns on integrated graphics. Low shadow resolution, simplified effects — the preset for older laptops and entry-level CPUs.
2
Low / MediumMid-range GPUs. Balanced visuals and frame rate — the sweet spot for most players.
3
HighDedicated GPUs with headroom. Full effects with some room for higher resolutions.
4
UltraEverything enabled, no compromises. For high-end cards and 1440p or 4K displays.

How to install it

Complementary is a shader pack, not a mod. It runs inside Iris or OptiFine. You drop it into shaderpacks, not mods.

  1. Install Iris (Fabric/NeoForge) or OptiFine. Iris is recommended for performance — it works alongside Sodium.
  2. Download the shader pack from complementary.dev or Modrinth. Do not extract the ZIP.
  3. Place the .zip file in .minecraft/shaderpacks.
  4. In-game: Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. Select Complementary Reimagined. Start with a lower preset and adjust upward.
Installer available. Complementary offers an installer that downloads and installs the shader automatically with Iris. Requires Java on your system (not Minecraft's bundled Java).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Reimagined and Unbound?
Reimagined preserves Minecraft's unique visual elements. Unbound is designed for a more realistic experience. Both are the same pack — only the default settings differ. You can switch between them after installation.
Will it run on my laptop?
Try the Potato preset. It is designed for integrated graphics. If frame rate is still low, reduce render distance or switch to MakeUp Ultra Fast.
Does it work with Sodium?
Complementary Reimagined runs on Iris, which is designed to work with Sodium. Install both Sodium and Iris for the best performance.
What is the Potato preset?
Potato is the lowest performance tier — designed for integrated graphics and older laptops. It reduces shadow resolution, simplifies volumetric effects, and lowers the overall rendering load while keeping the core vanilla-plus look.
Where can I download Complementary Reimagined?
From complementary.dev (the official site) or Modrinth. The creator also offers an installer that downloads and installs the shader automatically with Iris.
