Java & Bedrock · 16x Resolution

Bare Bones

A deliberately flat, simplified texture pack. Removes visual noise without removing detail. Popular for PvP and for players on low-end hardware who still want a clean look. Not a vanilla-plus pack — it changes the style significantly, and that's the whole point.

What Bare Bones actually does

Bare Bones strips Minecraft textures down to their essential shapes and colors. No gradients, no noise, no texture variation. Grass is one flat green. Stone is one flat grey. The goal is clarity — you see the block shape, not the surface detail. That's a fundamentally different design goal from a pack like Faithful, which tries to preserve the original look while increasing resolution.

This is not a "better looking" pack in the traditional sense. It is a different aesthetic. For PvP, the flat colors make it easier to spot players and items against the terrain. For builders, the simplified textures make large structures read more clearly — a whole castle becomes easier to parse when the stone blocks aren't competing with their own texture noise.

The performance story is worth being honest about: Bare Bones doesn't improve frame rate. It's 16x resolution, same as vanilla, so texture memory usage is similar. What it does is reduce visual complexity, which can make the game feel cleaner even if the raw numbers are the same. If you're looking for actual performance gains, you want a shader or an optimization mod, not a texture pack.

What to expect

1
Flat colorsNo gradients or noise on most blocks — the block's shape is the block.
2
Simplified itemsTools and weapons have minimal detail — easier to identify at a glance.
3
16x resolutionSame as vanilla, but visually simpler. No extra texture memory.
4
Low performance impactEquivalent to vanilla in load. The benefit is visual clarity, not reduced rendering.

How to install it

Bare Bones is a resource pack, not a mod. You drop it into resourcepacks, not mods.

  1. Download the ZIP for your edition from the official Bare Bones website or CurseForge. Do not extract it.
  2. Place the ZIP in .minecraft/resourcepacks on Java, or double-click the .mcpack on Bedrock.
  3. In-game: Options → Resource Packs. Move Bare Bones to the selected column.
  4. Click Done.
Not vanilla-plus. If you want a pack that looks like vanilla but better, use Stay True or Faithful 32x. Bare Bones is a deliberate departure from the vanilla look.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bare Bones good for PvP?
Yes. The flat textures make players and items easier to see against the terrain. Many PvP players use flat packs for this reason. It does not give a competitive advantage in the game's code, only in visual clarity.
Does Bare Bones improve performance?
Not significantly. It is 16x resolution, same as vanilla, so texture memory usage is similar. The performance benefit comes from visual clarity, not from reduced rendering load.
Does Bare Bones work on Bedrock?
Yes. Bare Bones has a Bedrock version available on its official site.
Is Bare Bones a vanilla-plus pack?
No. Bare Bones is a deliberate departure from the vanilla look. If you want vanilla-plus, use Faithful 32x or Stay True instead.
What resolution is Bare Bones?
16x — the same as vanilla. Bare Bones reduces visual complexity, not resolution. That's why it doesn't affect performance compared to vanilla.
